Default Restoration Intern Position

TITLE: Restoration Intern
DEPARTMENT: Conservation
STATUS: Full time (Temporary)
REPORTS TO: Restoration Project Manager
REPORTING LOCATION: Angeles National Forest, Texas Canyon Fire Station, Saugus CA

Position Overview:
In collaboration with the Angeles National Forest and National Forest Foundation, assists the Restoration Project Manager with restoration projects on the Angeles National Forest. Duties include care, maintenance, and out-planting of containerized plants at restoration site, watering, weeding, and general maintenance at the restoration site. Must approach all tasks with respect for natural, cultural and fiscal resources, co-workers, volunteers, partner agencies, and organizations. This is a full-time seasonal position, 40 hours a week. Please note that the job reports to Saugus, CA.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Under cooperative agreements between RSABG and partner agencies, assists in the execution of restoration projects.
• Become familiar with restoration practices
• Plant container plants at restoration sites
• Drive and navigate to field sites
• Collect seeds for restoration sites
• Plant container plants at restoration sites
• Water, weed, and conduct maintenance at restoration sites.
• Supervise and assist volunteers

Qualifications:
• A working knowledge of basic taxonomic principles and characteristics of major plant families and California flora desired.
• The physical ability to perform labor such as transporting water, planting container plants, bending and standing for long periods of time.
• Ability to use heavy equipment such as a soil auger.
• Knowledge of basic horticulture practices and/or willingness to learn required.
• Willingness to work with or be around pesticides or herbicides with appropriate training and supervision.
• Valid driver’s license and willingness to drive a large box truck or other large vehicle.

Physical demands
• Ability to conduct fieldwork under a variety of environmental conditions is required.
• The physical ability to work outdoors all day in unpredictable weather conditions.
• Must have physical strength and endurance sufficient to carry field equipment and supplies.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
